What's due, and What's coming up
1. Should be able to answer this question when asked. The answer is your ticket to race your chariot.
2. Should have sent me these answers on March 15 (The ides of March)
3. Should have done these questions long ago, if you haven't, send them in.
2 and 3 above we will correct in class on Tuesday. Get them done before then.
This Friday we race our chariots. See below for what is needed by Friday.
-Make a video introduction, gladiator style, about why your sphero is the greatest.
-Race one is a timed race around the course. The sphero must be programmed to automatically complete the course. Fastest time wins.
- Race two is a mass start. The sphero that completes the course first, with chariot attached, wins.
Remember, chariots must be propelled by the sphero. Spheros are taken off the course once the chariot is no longer attached. Other than that, we don't have many other rules. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favour.

Your Chariot
Here is a clip of chariot racing from what was the most expensive film ever made, famous for all the money they spent on sets and animals, and making it in colour! Ben-Hur
When done your assignments that we talked about yesterday, we will go onto making a chariot.
Design your chariot. It must be built for speed AND collisions. The teacher has some limited supplies, so bring supplies from home, especially a large plastic cup. Make sure to make the chariot look awesome. If you don't have supplies, then we go back to answering questions.
Make a 30 second to 1 minute video highlighting the features of your chariot and why it so awesome. An iMovie trailer might be good for that. Here are some examples from last year.
Race 1 A Warm-Up
Program you chariot to go around a 10ft bench. This is timed and a chance for your 4 horses (sphero) to limber up.
Race 2 Stuff Just Got Real
A mass start. Horses (spheros) running loose will be removed from the track. First one to finish (survive) 10 laps wins.

Pie Day
We have talked about the ancient Greeks and their mathematical philosophers and the Pythagorus Math Cult. Today we will study the circular arches and domes that the Romans built with the math knowledge that they acquired.

Project on Ancient Greece
Step 1 Think of what topic you want to do the project on
Step 2 Find information on your topic and record where the information came from and what you found
Step 3 Modify your topic to reflect the facts you were able to find (For example, my topic may have started out as being about Athens but after my research I may slightly alter my topic to be about the Parthenon, the famous building that looks down upon Athens.)
Step 4 Break your topic into logical categories. For example, my project about the Parthenon may have categories such as 1. How it was built 2. Why it was built 3. Famous events through history that occurred at the building, including the present day robbery by the British Museum (though the British Museum has another point of view).

Step 5-Organize your facts into categories around one Topic. (an example: Topic-Athens, Categories-Location and size, Role in Ancient Greece, Contributions like democracy and philosophy.) Some facts probably won't fit into your categories, so be prepared to throw some facts out at this point.
Step 5-Present your information onto kidblog in a slideshow. The presentation should include your categories, graphics, and SOURCES.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Today in the United States they celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Fifty years ago this March King was involved in a march in Selma to bring attention to voter rights, which was a movie playing in local theatres. One of the participants, John, Lewis, who had his skull crushed, was accused by Trump a few days ago as being all talk, no action.

Read here reflections 52 years later of the march from Mrs Robinson, who was left for dead. The advice of the police sheriff was to leave the bodies “for the buzzards to eat.” At the bottom of this link is a movie trailer of Selma.

1. In the song above, one of the passages is "saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle." What is meant by that?
2. Another passage from the song is "The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful." What is meant by that? What is your point of view of that approach?
3. In the news report, what comparison is made between the WW2 German troops and the Alabama State Troopers?
4. Why would the Blacks want the vote?
5. Why would the local authorities be resisting Blacks voting?
6. Why would the state troopers' treatment of Mrs Robinson eventually advance the cause of voter rights?
7. Much of the reporting of what happened at the event is by interviews, with few pictures. Why would the local authorities restrict the movement of the journalists and the people with cameras and hamper their ability to give a first hand account of what happened?
8. At the time of this march, as in much of the U.S. history, America was active in promoting freedom and justice in other parts of the world. Linking back to question 1, how would the events at Selma embarrass the United States in promoting justice and freedom?
9. Reading the news reports, people commented that the racist policies that existed in Selma were accepted because that was how things were. People were raised with those racist practices and few thought to question them till the Civil Rights Movement. Looking around at our society, what unjust practices do you see in Canada?
